(Closed as of December 2013) I can get a little crazy when it comes to cheesesteaks. I remember one trip where I was coming back from NYC and pulled off of I-95 in search of Pat’s or Geno’s. This was prior to my smartphone days so I asked my cousin to guide me in over the phone but to no avail. I left Philly empty-handed and empty-stomach’ed that day! Fast forward to 2013 and my favorite, Anvil’s Cheesesteaks suddenly has some now competition in N. Raleigh, the newly opened South Philly Steaks and Dogs. South Philly sits in the same triangle at Wake Forest Road and Falls of Neuse as does Machupicchu and Fonda y Birrieria which is good news for foodies! Inside it’s all Philly, all da time with sports memorabilia from the local teams (Phillies, Flyers) decorating the wall. I order the classic whiz wit which is a cheesesteak with cheese wiz and grilled onions. Oh and throw on some peppers for good measure! My combo with drink and fries comes out to about $9 which is about right.
It takes a bit of time for my food which is no big deal since the place just opened up and at least you know it’s fresh. I grab my plastic platter at the counter and it’s classic. 10″ cheesesteak covered in bright orange cheese product, crisp shoestring fries and of course a nice soda to wash things down with. South Philly does their steaks with Amoroso rolls which is really nice: thin, crusty outside with a soft interior to soak up the steak grease and juice. The sandwich is not as finely chopped as Anvil’s giving it more of a chew and sinew to the meat. The peppers and onions are fine but I think I’ll pass on the cheese wiz next time and go with provolone. And the fries? Very crispy with a slight coating, nice job there.
With the casual interior and menu, South Philly Steaks and Dogs probably makes for a better lunch and takeout spot. And for that purpose, they are doing a very nice job right out the gate. I’ll need another visit or two to really compare against my favorite, Anvil’s. But right now they definitely put out an excellent cheesesteak which will give Anvil’s a run for its money. Which is a good thing because when there’s competition, the customers usually win. So if you’ve got a hankering for some rib-eye and cheese on a bun while in N. Raleigh, take a visit to South Philly Steaks and Dogs. It’s a quick and delicious visit to the City of Brotherly Love! And cheese-steaks…
