First Take: Fresca Cafe at Waverly Place in Cary

Interior and counter at Fresca Cafe in Cary, Foodalicious Follies

A little bit Italian, a little bit mod, a little bit different is the best way to describe Fresca Cafe!  Located in the renovated and fab Waverly Place, this shopping plaza is seeing a rebirth and renovation that is mighty impressive.  With ornate fountains and lighting, new tenants such as Enrigo’s, Gigi’s Cupcakes, Menchies and Fresca Cafe will hopefully make this plaza a shopping and eating destination.  First thing you’ll notice about Fresca Cafe is the hip, padded chairs out front on the sidewalk.  A nice shaded eating and lounging area if you need some fresh air.  Inside Fresca you’ll find a corner of lit display cases and LCD panels.  Pastries in one case, gelato in the other, espresso machine in the back.  The dining area is a bit spartan with a fake 15′ “fireplace” that gives the place a interesting feel.   Really hard to describe the decor here, but it’s mostly modern.  I order a lunch of quiche lorraine and a raspberry oatmeal fruit square for a bit under $10, no drink included.

My quiche was a nice slice, about 5″ across. I’ve made quiche before and it’s actually really easy, just a lot of egg, cheese, veggie and meat along with a pie crust and you’re ready to go. Fresca’s version of it was very good, loaded with thick-cut bacon, dense with cheese and an overall good mix of flavors. My only slight complaint was that the crust may have been baked a bit too brown. The raspberry square was excellent too: buttery crust, loaded with slightly tart fruit and crumbles on top. Very nicely done. The dessert case has quite a few other offerings I’d like to try out, all in mini-sizes so you can enjoy them with a nice cup of coffee or espresso. My overall take on Fresca Cafe is nice job. I don’t quite understand the decor and presentation, maybe it’s modern Italian cafe? The mix of LCD panels, modern decor along with more old-school offerings is an interesting and odd mix to me. But in the end, Fresca delivers high-quality savory eats, pastries and gelato and I guess that’s all that matters. Check out Fresca Cafe the next time you’re in Waverly Place. The location is hidden in the back on the ground floor (to the right and behind Whole Foods). I think the place is worth the effort…
