First Take: Krave Restaurant and Lounge in Raleigh

Cool, blue bar at Krave in Raleigh, Foodalicious Follies

(Closed as of December 2012) When you think of S. Glenwood what immediately comes to mind?  Probably bars, clubs, stilettos and dragon-shirts, right?  Well of course all those folks partying on S. Glenwood need to eat someplace so enter, Krave!  Located in the space formerly known as the Red Room, you will barely recognize the place.  Super-mod with chromed seating, high black leather booths and a blue glow, Krave is definitely made with the club kids in mind.  Think S. Florida or SoCal and you’ve got an idea of what the decor is like.  The menu is starting off small, mostly small plates and a handful of entrees along with a late-night menu to keep party-goer’s moving along.  With hours ending at 4am over the weekend, you know who Krave’s target audience is.

Scallops with pancetta at Krave in Raleigh, Foodalicious Follies

I stopped in for a quick dinner visit and ordered up some seared scallops along with some wings osso-bucco style. Krave served up a really generous plate of four large scallops sitting atop some spinach and shredded pancetta.  The scallops were cooked just right (still tender) and the dish was solid, just wished the citrus sauce was cooked down a bit for more flavor.  The wings were really interesting.  Roasted and then flash-fried, they came out with the drumsticks cut off at the end.  The chicken was tender with a bit of crisp, the Thai-honey sauce had just the right amount of kick to balance out the sweetness, well-done!  Service was a bit uneven at Krave but the place has just opened up.  Issues with the iPad and receipts caused a bit of a delay but high-tech doesn’t always mean reliable, eh?  Overall Krave is doing a very good job in the early going.  They’ve got some kinks to work out but the concept of a late-night, clubbing type eatery and lounge is on target for the location.  With prices a bit higher than average you’re coming here for interesting food with a twist and the ambiance.  But hey, I gotta admit that this place is probably not the crowd for me but you may adore the scene.  And there’s nothing wrong with that!  Or those Thai-honey wings, yum…
